Drew is not a risk taker. In fact, he is scared to do anything when he perceives he might fail. We have to fix that. Drew is also easily frustrated when he cannot do something "right". He will revert to childish behavior displayed only during times of frustration with some underlying embarrassment. We have to fix that too. Drew's page will record the path we take to work on both risk taking and response to frustration. It is hard to know the reason why children are seemingly afraid to take risks. I decided my plan of attack is going to involve first asking Drew himself. This week my focus will be to ask him about taking risks. It occurs to me that perhaps there is a difference between risk and fear. He could be afraid to take a risk and fail, afraid of unknown situations, or perhaps other reasons. Just last night we had an experience where he displayed his tendency to avoid unknown situations. As Drew and Jack were in the bath, Dave and I set up a "car wash" style dry off station. Dave and I both held towels horizontally and shook them slightly and encouraged Drew to dry off by walking through our make shift car wash. It took Drew several minutes of contemplation before he would go through the car wash. Shame on me for not taking that perfect moment to ask him about his hesitation but I will not miss the next opportunity.
